Every morning i have a multivitaqmin. This conains 100% RDA of a lot of things INCLUDING 100% Vitamin C. However, i then also have TWO vitamin C tablets, each of which contain 100% Vitamin C RDA. I also drink lots of pure orange juice every day which is full of vitamin C. I have asked my mum why i have vitamin C tablets when with the multivitamin tablet and drinks alone i am over my RDA but she said i should anyway because it wont do me anybad, it will just pass out of my body. In this case i thought there would be no point having excess if it just passes out of my body.
Could somebody tell me if there are any negative affects of having about 4x the RDA of vitamin C?
Excess Vitamin C?
Your body does not store Vitamin C. It takes the amount it needs and the rest is passed out as waste.
Reply:No there are no negative effects of having more than your rda of vitamin C.
Your mum is correct. The excess vitamin C is simply passed through your body.
It is the only vitamin that you cannot overdose on.
Reply:No only if you do a monster load of it and then you Might get a little nasty feeling
When ever you are sick take heavy loads of it You need it along with all the others needed to make a balanced diet.
RDA is for someone who is a couch potato and just to keep you alive the more you do the more you need Vitamin C is the same when you are sick you need more...
Look at what Lance Armstrong eats 4200 calories a day in the off season.
Reply:USRDA for vit C is 70mg..much too low...you are doing your body good at 4x RDA...especially during cold weather of if you smoke..good anti-stress vitamin also
Reply:The only negative effect is the waste of time %26amp; money on a excess your body just gets rid off. Otherwise, it's nothing to be concerned about.
Reply:becareful as you age, the affinity to discharge the excess vitamin c will gradually drop... excess vitamin c could cause (only possibly) toxicosis, sclerosis and acidosis
Reply:Your Mom is right...Vit C is a "water soluable" vitamin....which means what you don't need getas flushed out thru the kidneys...and actually, during cold %26amp; flu season it's best to have a bit more on board!Vitamins are either water soluable or fat soluable. The fat soluable are the ones you can have probs with if you take too much as they are stored in your body fat....I'd recommend research whenever one starts on a vitam in regime.
Reply:Using Vitamin C products beyond recommended the limits may cause stomachaches and diarrhea. Even though the body would only use as much as it needs of the vitamin, Vitamin C Overdose can hinder metabolic activities in the body.
The recommended dietary allowance (RDA) for Vitamin C in nonsmoking adults is 75 mg per day for women and 90 mg per day for men. For smokers, the RDAs are 110 mg per day for women and 125 mg per day for men. A dose of 200 milligrams daily is almost enough to maximize plasma and lymphocyte levels.
Higher levels of Vitamin C are needed when under environmental stress such as trauma, fever or infection. Full saturation is reached with daily intakes of 200-500 mg per day (in 2-3 divided doses). This is a water-soluble protein, and anything in excess is excreted by the body. Vitamin C Overdose can cause diarrhea, gas, or stomach upset. Other side effects could be stomach cramps, nausea, and diarrhea, and an increased risk of developing kidney stones. Large amounts of Vitamin C reduce body levels of copper, an essential nutrient. People with iron overload diseases must avoid Vitamin C Overdose, as it increases iron absorption. Special medical advice must be taken by individuals who have kidney stones. If a pregnant mother takes 6,000 mg of Vitamin C, the baby may develop rebound scurvy due to a sudden drop in daily intake. Hemochromatosis patients should not take Vitamin C due to enhanced accumulation of non-heme iron in the presence of this vitamin.
ALSO.... I loveeeee vit.c tablets and ate like 8 once just cos they're yummy.. and I was on the loo for hours!
Reply:the excess vit C passes out in the urine you need not eat separate vi C tablest, ofcourse there is no harm because excess will pass out in urine.
Reply:just rather colourful urine and spending money on a vitamin that is only going down the toilet.
