Substituting "C" batteries with?

C batteries are so expensive...

Am I able to substitute another energy source for a C battery?

I heard that AA battieres are the same length as C batteries, would AA batteries be able to work in C battery operated toys/machines?

Or what can I use other than C batteries to operate a C battery machine?

Thanks!!!

You might be able to substitute other size batteries. The difference though is how much current the battery can supply. Larger batteries supply (a little bit) more current, but they all have the same voltage. If you tried AA's, for example, and the toy just didn't work right, like a motor might not be able to get going, you could put a couple AA's in parallel and that would solve the problem. But then you're probably not saving any money.
Reply:Get some NiMH AA rechargeable batteries and the C-size adapters (from Fry's, 1st link below). The adapters take up all the space so the AA's stay in place, and you can recharge the AA's over and over again. Much cheaper! Of course, they'll run down faster than the regular C's, but since you can recharge them, it won't really matter. If you get two sets of batteries, you can have one charging while you use the other.

The second link is a good, fast AA charger that comes with 4 AA NiMH batteries. Fry's has these on sale 2 or 3 times a year for under $10...
Reply:i have used AA batteries in place of C many many times. yes, it works but only lasts about 1/3 as long due to size, of course.
Reply:If the device affords enough room, you can use D cells. They are the same voltage (so are AA and AAA) but the larger D size size should provide longer operating time for the device.if there is no room for D cells, the best bet may be to spring for rechargable C cells.
Reply:AAs will work if you wedge them into place, but won't last very long. Maybe you can find a power supply to plug it into to avoid using batteries.
